The story
Base Restaurant in Ulverston builds its modern British cuisine around the immediate surroundings of the South Lakes. Mark Satterthwaite grew up in this part of Cumbria and channels that regional familiarity into every dish. His background includes a spot on MasterChef The Professionals in 2018, which sharpened his focus on seasonal procurement. He prioritises meat, fish, and vegetables sourced from nearby farms and coastlines.
The kitchen moved into The Coach House at Ford Park in June 2020 when Mark repurposed his previous catering venture. That initial pivot towards contactless service quickly evolved into a permanent dining concept offering structured evening meals. Dinners follow a set menu that changes weekly, allowing the team to react to whatever arrives fresh from local suppliers. Guests often request the traditional sticky toffee pudding, which arrives baked and paired with a dedicated tub of butterscotch sauce.
Diners sit at the base of Hoad Hill, surrounded by landscape views that shift dramatically between daylight and dusk. The room focuses attention on the plates rather than decorative excess, letting the food carry the conversation. Wine selections come through EWGA of Carnforth, featuring small batches pulled from independent vineyards rather than large commercial producers. This careful curation aligns with the establishment’s AA Rosette, a mark of culinary excellence that recognises consistent quality night after night.
