The story
The Merchant’s Yard in Tideswell delivers contemporary cuisine rooted in a century of local commerce. The building traces its origins to March 1935, when Maurice Markovitz purchased the site for twelve hundred pounds to supply hardware and building materials. That original depot evolved into a national trading group, yet the kitchen and dining room transformed the vacant premises in November 2015. Maurice’s great nephews now steer the operation, blending family stewardship with a clearly defined cooking philosophy.
The Head Chef leads a modern kitchen that prioritises fresh, locally sourced ingredients across every plate. Seasonal menus rotate regularly to reflect regional availability, balancing richer mains with lighter salads and sandwiches. Classic preparations receive subtle contemporary adjustments rather than heavy reinterpretation. This disciplined approach earned the restaurant two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence, recognising consistent technique and thoughtful execution.
Original timber beams and vintage signage from the building’s early twentieth century trade remain visible throughout the main dining area. These historic fixtures sit alongside comfortable furnishings in the adjacent bar and courtyard space, encouraging unhurried conversation. The bar team complements this environment with craft ales, signature cocktails, and internationally sourced wines like South African Chenin Blanc and Argentine Malbec. Staff guide patrons through these selections without overwhelming the table, letting ingredient quality dictate the final pour.
