The story
House of the Rising Sun introduced a distinct international style to Shrewsbury when it opened on Butcher Row in 2013. Founder Sam Taylor launched the venue after building momentum at The Libertine Cocktail Bar nearby. His early menus focused heavily on Pacific Rim techniques inspired by his travels across Australia and Southeast Asia. That regional foundation soon expanded into a wider global programme.
The current kitchen team brings personal globe-trotting backgrounds to every plate, allowing them to rotate ingredients and techniques throughout the year. This dedication to constant exploration earned the venue an AA Rosette, which it has held for five consecutive years. Diners can expect a shifting menu that prioritises fresh sourcing and cross-cultural cooking over rigid tradition. The approach keeps the International offering grounded in daily market availability rather than fixed recipes.
Guests often pair their meals with a carefully structured wine list featuring selections from New Zealand, Italy, and California alongside classic cocktails like the Manhattan and Dark & Stormy. A dedicated sommelier stands ready to suggest pairings that match the evolving food programme. The space maintains a lively but unhurried pace, reflecting the team’s commitment to genuine hospitality. Long-term patrons appreciate how the venue functions as a reliable neighbourhood fixture without losing its adventurous edge.
