Restored Edwardian Architecture

Thames Lido in Reading offers a distinctive blend of historic architecture and seasonal Eastern Mediterranean dining within a Grade II listed swimming pool. The restaurant occupies the King's Meadow pool, a structure designed by Borough Engineer John Bowen that first opened to the public in 1902. A three-year restoration led by Arne Ringner and the Bristol Lido team, working with architects Marshall and Kendon, returned the building to use after it closed in 1974. A public campaign secured the heritage listing in 2004, protecting the site before redevelopment. The facility was originally fed from the Thames before converting to mains water in the 1950s, and guests now dine overlooking the water in a space that retains the privacy-focused layout intended for the original Edwardian ladies' bath.

Seasonal Eastern Mediterranean Menu

The kitchen holds a 2026 AA One Rosette Award for delivering seasonal Eastern Mediterranean-inspired dishes sourced from local farms and waters. Shareable plates anchor the service, featuring albondigas served with guindilla peppers and cave-aged Manchego, providing a cooling contrast with a hint of spice. Warm dishes include a mussels flatbread loaded with nduja and crème fraîche, while breakfast draws guests to French toast. The menu rotates with availability, reflecting the kitchen's commitment to fresh ingredients, and small plates are offered between midday and 8pm for flexible dining. This emphasis on direct sourcing and vibrant flavors underpins the accolade for culinary excellence.
