The story
Crown & Mitre occupies a Grade II listed building at the end of Ferry Street in King's Lynn, built as private homes in the 1600s and converted to a pub in 1743. Ownership changed in 2023 when a local native returned to take the independent freehold, applying over thirty years of hospitality experience to the venue. The aim is to elevate the food offering while preserving the warm, informal character that defines a traditional pub. This balance allows the establishment to attract diners seeking refined pub cuisine without losing the relaxed atmosphere of its historic setting.
The kitchen operates as a gastropub with a strong emphasis on seafood, reflecting the pub's position on the banks of the River Ouse. Menus combine pub classics and daily specials with influences from Dutch, Belgian, German, and Spanish traditions, all centered on local sustainable produce. Seasonal programming includes dedicated crab festival menus, highlighting fresh catches when they are at their peak. This focus on provenance and seasonal detail supports the recognition granted by a 2026 AA Rosette for culinary excellence.
The Vinery offers dining spaces with clear views across the river, providing a distinct spot for meals and drinks surrounded by water. Nautical memorabilia hangs throughout the interior, adding texture and quirkiness that nods to the building's maritime history. A beer garden extends the capacity for outdoor enjoyment, keeping the pub accessible for casual socializing alongside its seated service. The combination of riverside views and historic architecture frames the dining experience firmly within King's Lynn's waterfront character.
