The story
Located near Harleston, the Fox & Goose Inn occupies a Grade II* listed building in Fressingfield that traces its origins to the early sixteenth century. Originally constructed as the village Guildhall around 1509, the timber-framed structure now houses a restaurant known for its modern British cooking and two AA Rosettes. Guests navigate between several dining rooms that preserve the building's character while offering comfortable spaces for celebratory meals or leisurely weekend lunches. The kitchen maintains high standards through a commitment to quality ingredients and thoughtful flavour combinations, earning the venue recognition in Michelin and Harden's guides alongside its rosette status.
The menu shifts with the seasons, highlighting regional produce in dishes that balance tradition with contemporary technique. Starters feature compositions such as duck rillettes paired with compressed watermelon, pineapple salsa, and a goats cheese panna cotta, or cod cheeks finished with a mussel, lemon grass, and coconut sauce. Main courses present proteins like pork fillet served with fondant potato, poached pear, and juniper-spiced red cabbage purée, while seafood selections include sea bream accompanied by saffron croquette potatoes and slow-roasted tomatoes. These plates reflect a careful approach to texture and seasoning that defines the kitchen's style.
Sweet courses provide a refined conclusion, often built around house-made elements like a treacle and hazelnut tart with poached rhubarb and vanilla ice cream, or an earl grey panna cotta set with blood orange sorbet and honey gel. The wine list supports the British menu with a curated selection ranging from crisp whites to structured reds, chosen to complement the richness of the charcuterie and roasted meats. For guests preferring a longer progression, the tasting menu is available throughout the dining rooms, allowing the full breadth of the kitchen's seasonal offerings to be experienced in a single sitting.
