The story
David and Karen Richards reopened the St Mawes Hotel in summer 2015 with a vision for a lively environment where locals and visitors share the space. Karen Richards directed a full renovation that blends traditional Cornish heritage with contemporary design, using bright fabrics and hand-selected art to create an informal yet stylish atmosphere. The restaurant occupies a central position alongside the sheltered waters of the Roseland Peninsula, drawing natural light into the upper dining room where guests can watch the boats pass.
The kitchen operates with a "from the heart, from the hearth" philosophy, prioritizing provenance by working directly with local growers, farmers, and fishermen. This commitment to authentic Cornish cooking underpins the restaurant's status as an AA 1 Rosette winner for culinary excellence. Menus shift with the seasons, featuring small plates, wood-fired pizzas, and indulgent desserts crafted from ingredients caught or harvested nearby. Blackboard specials highlight the day's catch, while the team ensures every dish reflects the rhythms of the coast.
Every Thursday during summer, the hotel hosts Surf & Turf BBQ nights where diners can order straight from the grill without a reservation. The waterfront menu showcases grilled Cornish sardines, mackerel burgers, Cumberland sausage glazed with honey, and shell-on prawns. Options rotate between locally landed fish like John Dory or grilled lobster and butcher's cuts such as thick-pork chops, served with sides like corn ribs and padron peppers. Live music accompanies the evening, creating a convivial scene that extends from the outdoor seating area into the lower deck bar.
