The story
Khushi’s Restaurant in Edinburgh has served authentic Indian food since a single storefront opened in 1947. The establishment quickly became the United Kingdom’s second oldest continuously operating Indian restaurant, surviving multiple relocations before settling at its current Forrest Road address. Today, his sons manage the same kitchen where Mrs Khushi once guided daily operations for thirty years. This enduring lineage earned the kitchen one AA Rosette for culinary excellence, recognising the steady refinement of recipes passed through three generations.
The Indian kitchen balances tandoor char with long simmering pots, building layers of warmth across bold flavoured comfort plates. Guests frequently order Mrs Khushi’s traditional pakora, vegetable fritters finished with a rich meat sauce or tangy tomato chutney. Heavier mains rely on overnight braising, as seen in the black lentil butter dal and the slow cooked Railway lamb curry inspired by Kolkata railway kitchens. Coastal preparations appear alongside these staples, notably the chargrilled Recheado prawns marinated in Goan spices and coconut.
Dining rooms maintain a casual, unpretentious layout designed for easy conversation and group sharing. The adjacent bar complements the kitchen with straightforward craft beers and custom spice led creations. Patrons often order the Berry Blush cocktail, blending gin with ripe strawberry and zesty lime for a bright finish. Those preferring alcohol free options can choose the Edinburgh Sunset mocktail, which combines saffron, fresh orange and sparkling soda.
