The story
Traditionswirtshaus Kraimoos in Grabenstätt has welcomed guests since 1858, with the Schwögler family steering operations through five generations. Current owners Marija and her sister Natalie manage the kitchen following renovations led by their father Hans-Georg in 1992. This Bavarian establishment stands between Chieming and Grabenstätt, occupying a site that once served as the final resting point for merchants climbing toward Traunstein. The kitchen continues this history by preparing substantial Bavarian meals using regional produce, prioritizing consistency and flavor over fleeting trends.
The menu centers on robust Bavarian classics delivered with generous portions and fair pricing. Regular orders include crispy roast pork and Kasspatzn, while the chefs also prepare fresh fish caught in nearby Lake Chiemsee. Seasonal grilling in the beer garden adds knusprige Hendl to the lineup during warmer months. Sweet finishes feature Kaiserschmarrn and apple strudel. The Schlemmer Atlas recognized this commitment to quality with one spoon, praising the warm service and authentic presentation in its 2026 guide.
Patrons select seating in rooms fitted with tiled stoves or under the shelter of an old vault, preserving the architectural heritage of the building. The outdoor beer garden offers a shaded setting with direct sightlines to the Chiemgau Alps. Traditional events like the Maibaum raising and Starkbierfest anchor the calendar, reflecting the deep local roots of the venue. A daily subscription lunch for nearby workers keeps the main hall bustling, creating an environment where locals and visitors share the same table.
