The story
Herzogliche Dampfwäscherei in Schwerin turns former industrial steam into refined brunch and everyday meals. At the close of the nineteenth century, this building operated as Mecklenburg’s most advanced steam laundry. Today the machinery fell silent while the kitchen took over. Guests now gather near the castle and historic theater district to share meals in a space that offers a sunlit winter garden, a central hall, and private dining rooms suited for quiet conversation.
Proprietor Christien Messerschmidt built the restaurant around a simple premise that enjoyment does not require a special occasion. Her kitchen staff blends regional traditions with straightforward technique, favoring fresh ingredients over unnecessary complexity. A bowl of homemade Solyanka draws on local freshwater catches, while a summer salad pairs grilled rump steak or pan-fried fish fillets with crisp vegetables and Parmesan shavings. The kitchen prepares the same quality dishes for the weekend brunch as for the evening dinner, keeping the focus on steady execution rather than fleeting trends.
The Schlemmer Atlas recognized this focused kitchen with one and a half spoons last year, citing reliable fish preparations, beef carpaccio, and apple strudel. The carpaccio arrives dressed with arugula, pine nuts, and truffle oil alongside shaved Parmesan and balsamic cream. Roasted duck from Cherry Valley comes with mini dumplings and apple red cabbage, while the honey sesame coated tuna fillet rests on sugar snap peas. Every dessert follows the same principle of honest sweetness, whether you choose the white chocolate crème brûlée or the classic apple strudel served with vanilla ice cream.
