The story
Alpe Dornach sits at 1000 metres above sea level just outside Oberstdorf, where Bavarian cuisine meets high alpine tradition. The property began fifty years ago beneath a single pear tree, run by Eva-Maria Bock and her husband before their daughter Marion and son-in-law Heribert Dornach expanded the pasture. Christine Dornach now leads the kitchen after joining the family operation in 2006 alongside her brother Matthias.
Christine Dornach builds menus around meat raised on-site and game sourced from the nearby Tiefenbach hunting grounds. A rotating half-year schedule introduces mountain herb soup and braised roulades alongside lighter modern interpretations of local staples. This approach keeps the Bavarian kitchen firmly rooted in seasonality while accommodating vegan and vegetarian preferences. Consistent execution has earned the team two toques from Gault & Millau and a 2.5 spoon rating in the Schlemmer Atlas.
Dining rooms face outward toward the Oberstdorfer mountain panorama. Cowbells and distant bird calls drift across the meadow during summer service. Wooden tables catch the afternoon light as guests arrive for the Älpler breakfast spread. Fresh hay scent often lingers near the entrance when doors open between meals.
