The story
Eva and Werner Hochreiter steer the kitchen at Hochreiter's am Markt, offering Bavarian and Styrian cooking in the heart of Munich. The restaurant reopened in 2014 following a seven-month renovation of the former Löwen am Markt. The menu highlights regional classics alongside international delicacies, drawing on a network that brings fine wines from Austria to the table. Guests often order the chanterelle special when the season allows, while the Schlemmer Atlas awarded the establishment one and a half ladles for its fresh preparation of staples like veal schnitzel, duck breast, and entrecôte.
Located directly on the Viktualienmarkt, the dining room mixes traditional wooden furniture with a modern interior. A bar counter finished in red Corian anchors the space, illuminated by Glasbutzer luminaires. The high table crafted from an old workbench serves as a meeting point for regulars. Outside, a sun terrace lets guests watch the market bustle; a sprinkler system provides cooling during heatwaves. Even the sanitary area features a distinctive shingle ceiling made of Swiss stone pine, adding texture to the architectural contrast.
The restaurant offers an extensive selection of Austrian wines, paired with local Augustiner beer for those preferring German brews. A rustic wine bar occupies the cellar vault, providing a distinct atmosphere separate from the main dining area. This underground space rounds out the venue's appeal, allowing visitors to enjoy a glass of wine away from the street-level activity. Service remains attentive throughout, ensuring the family warmth extends to every table from the terrace to the lower levels.
