The story
Herrschaftszeiten - Das Paulaner im Tal sits at Tal 12 in Munich, serving a contemporary Bavarian cuisine that bridges centuries of local hospitality. The building has operated as a tavern since 1524, evolving from a private residence into a public house by 1612. Local tradition gives the current name a playful twist, translating it to “Lord, look to the side,” a phrase meant for relaxed evening conversations where strict scrutiny can be set aside. The Paulaner brewery acquired the property in 1921 and maintained its function as a neighborhood pub until a complete renovation revived the site in March 2022.
Modern Bavarian cooking anchors the menu, balancing historic recipes with updated techniques. Guests regularly order braised ox cheeks and house-made liver pâté alongside inventive plant-based alternatives like vegan white sausage and vegetarian protein cuts. This approach earned the venue a 1.5 ladle rating from the Schlemmer Atlas guide, which specifically praised how the refreshed layout honors the building’s half-millennium legacy. The kitchen keeps regional Bavarian fare grounded in seasonal ingredients and straightforward preparation.
The main hall spreads across four hundred square meters, offering two hundred sixty indoor seats beneath refreshed architectural lines that replace older fixtures. A separate courtyard adds two hundred thirty square meters of outdoor dining for those who prefer fresh air. The Boazn room accommodates smaller groups with flexible low tables and high counters near a fully equipped bar. Soundproofed recording booths and a dedicated conference suite further expand the venue beyond traditional gasthaus boundaries.
