The story
The Augustiner Spieglwirt stands in Munich as a working example of traditional Bavarian hospitality. Franz Xaver Spiegl purchased the 1849 farmstead property in 1898, anchoring a name that still guides visitors today. Marcus and Edith Wagner now manage the operation alongside their two sons, preserving a legacy recognized by the Schlemmer Atlas guide.
The kitchen prepares substantial dishes using straightforward techniques and locally sourced ingredients. Oven roasted pork shoulder and seasoned fried chicken anchor the weekly menu alongside seasonal vegetable sides. Vegetarian diners regularly order earthy cheese spätzle or pasta tossed in wild mushroom cream. The Wagner family ensures every Bavarian meal arrives at the table with honest, unpretentious flavor.
Guests move freely between the main Gaststube, a shaded outdoor beer garden, and the quieter Pelkoven Stube. A reconstructed wooden table once visited by Prince Regent Luitpold sits quietly in the central hall. Augustiner brewery pours its pale lager directly from oak casks after 5 p.m. each evening. Wine selections rotate steadily to balance the richness of the house meat dishes.
