The story
At Landgasthof Zur Post in Mengkofen, the kitchen balances Mediterranean sensibilities with Fusion creativity under the direction of Barbara Hutterer-Eckhart and Jan Petri. Since taking over in January 2020, they have preserved the historic spirit of the 1603 building while introducing rotating menus that highlight seasonal produce. The culinary program shifts regularly, offering steaks, burgers, and daily specials that reflect a pragmatic yet refined approach. This steady evolution recently secured two spoons from the Schlemmer Atlas, marking a space where traditional hospitality meets thoughtful execution.
Thursday and Friday bring dedicated barbecue evenings where grilled meats take center stage alongside lighter vegetable sides. Sunday afternoons often feature the Reindl format on the terrace, pairing slow-cooked cuts with casual conversation. Wednesday schedules pivot toward Sprizz Day, highlighting bright, aperitif-style drinks that complement the lighter Mediterranean offerings. Guests can also book the monthly Krimi-Dinner held in the adjacent Barockstadel, where narrative entertainment accompanies a multi-course meal designed around current market produce.
The original structure dates back to 1603, standing quietly within the Aitrachtal valley just outside the town center. Inside, diners choose between the glass-walled winter garden, an open-air terrace, or the cozy Poststüberl lounge. Thirty four-star comfort rooms upstairs extend the quiet pace into overnight stays, complete with soundproofed windows and natural timber accents. A small hall shop downstairs stocks regional preserves and house-made goods, rounding out a property built for lingering rather than rushing through a meal.
