The story
Eisgrub-Bräu has served consistent German cuisine in Mainz since opening its doors in 1989. The kitchen occupies a preserved 1872 structure that originally functioned as the city’s first Gasthausbrauerei. Guests sit beneath original architectural lines while watching their meals arrive from a fully equipped stainless steel pass. The ground floor remains completely barrier-free, allowing easy access for visitors using wheelchairs.
The German kitchen shifts from rustic house dishes to lighter plates, always designed to complement the house brews. Every batch follows strict brewing standards, combining soft local water, premium aroma hops, and quality barley. Regular taps feature a malty Märzen, a dark Schwarzbier, and a newer amber California Ale with pronounced hop notes. Warm kitchen service runs continuously until midnight across all seven days.
Readers of the Schlemmer Atlas recognized the consistent quality with a 2026 1 Kochlöffel award. The guide specifically praised the combination of solid German cooking and freshly drafted beer. Thursday and Friday afternoons host guided brewery walks that pair technical insights with direct tasting sessions. Those visits easily stretch into full evening programs when guests book ahead.
