The story
Fasika brings traditional African cuisine to the heart of Köln. Degene Kasahun Abegaz arrived in Germany in 1994 and spent years training in local kitchens before realizing a long held ambition. He opened this venue in 2002 alongside his wife, who previously worked as his culinary partner. The menu reflects years of professional experience blended with direct imports of aromatic spices from Ethiopia.
Spices arrive directly from Ethiopia to build the foundation of each meal. Lakech Tibs features grilled lamb alongside seasonal vegetables, while Doro Wet combines slow cooked chicken with house made fresh cheese and a soft boiled egg. The kitchen balances rich meat preparations with robust vegetarian staples that define modern African cuisine. Guests frequently order Ketfo, a minced beef dish finished with aromatic butter and sharp chili cheese.
The dining area features African inspired decor that encourages slower, more communal meals. Traditional East African custom favors eating with the hands, which engages multiple senses during each bite. Families and groups frequently share the mixed platter, choosing from roasted meats, lentil stews, and grilled tofu. Light finishes round out the service, with mango avocado sorbet and coconut parfait offered alongside daily dessert selections. This dedication to genuine African cuisine recently secured a single ladle award from the Schlemmer Atlas guide.
