The story
Pane & Olio brings contemporary Italian cooking to a quiet corner of Mons through an intimate fourteen seat setup. Chef Angelo Galasso arrived from Basilicata in southern Italy and carried those regional traditions into Belgium over twenty years ago. He designed this space deliberately, keeping the kitchen fully visible so guests can watch every preparation step. A single seasonal menu replaces any fixed list, shifting weekly according to market arrivals and his focus on small producers alongside quality Italian ingredients.
This Italian kitchen builds its reputation on precise methods rather than elaborate presentations. Guests often encounter pasta all’assassina, a Pugliese specialty where spaghetti cook directly in a spiced tomato sauce until the edges turn caramelized and crisp. Another frequent highlight pairs red tuna with steamed and flame seared courgettes finished with fresh mint, while a slow braised beef dish rests beside a rich Aglianico wine reduction and toasted cocoa flakes. The Gault&Millau guide awarded the establishment a thirteen point score, noting how Galasso personally presents each seasonal course to the seated guests.
The dining room stays deliberately compact to maintain a steady conversational pace between the counter and the tables. Galasso moves through the service personally, explaining each course before placing it down. Visitors frequently return for the finish of the meal, when generous pools of extra virgin olive oil remain on the plate. This simple bread and oil concept echoes the childhood memories that inspired the restaurant’s name.
