The story
Mit Schmackes serves honest Westphalian home cooking in the heart of Dortmund, a concept born when founder Christopher Reinecke discovered a handwritten family cookbook in his grandparents’ attic. He shared the discovery with his friend Kevin Großkreutz, a former professional footballer, and the pair transformed the site into a dedicated kitchen for careful German home cooking. Their partnership blends hospitality expertise with athletic discipline to deliver consistent meals. The Schlemmer Atlas recognized this steady approach by awarding the establishment one ladle in its 2026 guide.
Menus shift with harvest cycles while preserving foundational preparations like Potthucke and Panhas. Both dishes arrive alongside house-made herb quark and crisp salad. The kitchen peels and cuts fries from whole potatoes delivered daily by a local grower. Signature plates feature the Schwarzgelb Schnitzel dressed with coarse mustard and melted cheese, or the Malocher Pfanne built around bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin.
Exposed beams and raw concrete surfaces establish a modern factory aesthetic throughout the main hall. Booth seating lines the perimeter while central tables accommodate larger groups for weekend service. The bar area displays framed photographs of the founding partners alongside vintage brewing equipment. Visitors consistently note how the industrial framework supports both casual lunch crowds and formal evening dinners.
