The story
Ramona Azzaro opened Restaurant Marjellchen on Mommsenstraße in 1985, drawing inspiration from a recipe collection inherited from her East Prussian grandmother. She dedicated years to mastering these traditional methods, establishing the venue as a reliable spot for regional cooking in Berlin. When age required Ramona to step back, she transferred ownership in September 2020 under strict conditions to protect her legacy. The incoming team studied both the menu and the cultural values behind the dishes, adopting the mindset of the original owner. They preserved a "traute" relationship, a phrase from East Prussia denoting a bond of deep trust, ensuring the kitchen remained true to its origins.
The restaurant serves a menu defined by East Prussian cooking, presented on white tablecloths in a style noted by the Schlemmer Atlas guide with a one ladle award. The recognition highlights the establishment for delivering accurate versions of dishes such as Königsberger Klopse, Schlesisches Himmelreich, and Sauerbraten. These selections represent the staple foods of the coastal regions, prepared according to standards passed down through families before migration. The kitchen focuses on executing these recipes with precision, allowing the distinct flavors of the area to stand out without unnecessary alteration.
The interior provides a calm environment intended for relaxation, matching the comfortable reputation Ramona built over decades. Staff members uphold the standard of care that made the restaurant a second home for many regulars. Service runs daily from 17:00 to 23:00, offering consistent access to the culinary tradition. The ongoing commitment to authenticity was highlighted in a 2022 feature by the Preußen-Kurier, which documented how the team successfully continued the East Prussian heritage established by the founder.
