The story
Restaurant Rodelhaus in Arnsberg blends traditional Sauerland hospitality with focused Mediterranean cuisine. The foundations actually rest on a winter pastime rather than fine dining. In 1924, Stadtrat Heinrich Spiekermann organized the Rodel-Club Neheim, and his supporters constructed a wooden shelter along the Basenberg sled run just one year later. That modest blockhouse eventually evolved into the only German establishment bearing this name, later expanded by innkeeper Willi Kossmann and his son Ernst in 1975.
The kitchen anchors its menu around locally sourced produce and refined Mediterranean cooking principles. Chefs prepare the day’s catch, such as pan-seared dorade, alongside hearty cuts like Rodelhaus rinderfilet. Forest foraging adds another layer to the offerings, with seasonal menus frequently highlighting porcini and chanterelle mushrooms. Every dish arrives prepared with deliberate care, honoring both the mountain landscape and coastal flavor profiles.
Guests dine in a warm and contemporary space that captures sweeping vistas of Neheim and the surrounding peaks. Summer evenings often spill onto the adjacent beer garden, where the forest edge keeps the atmosphere grounded. This blend of rustic comfort and Mediterranean culinary variety earned the restaurant one and a half spoons from the Schlemmer Atlas guide. Critics highlighted the adaptable menu, which shifts smoothly between casual items like teriyaki burgers and structured plates featuring lamb chops.
