The story
Restaurant Kintaro in Cologne has anchored classical Japanese cuisine along the Rhine since October 1988. Takusaburo Arakawa arrived after training across Japan and brought a clear mission to share authentic preparations. He met Hedwig, a local resident who joined him overseas before returning home to open their own establishment. That morning marked the arrival of the city’s first dedicated sushi venue.
The Japanese kitchen focuses on preserving the natural character of every ingredient rather than masking them with heavy sauces. Fresh seafood and marine specialties form the foundation, while seaweed preparations and seasonal vegetables receive precise seasoning. Guests frequently order sashimi plates alongside light tempura batters and charcoal grilled selections. This disciplined method aligns with the restaurant’s Schlemmer Atlas recognition and reflects a steady commitment to balance.
A bright interior frames the space with clean lines and a timeless layout that avoids fleeting trends. Framed pieces by German and Japanese artists hang throughout the room, many created by visitors who have returned over decades. Patrons often choose seats at the counter to watch the preparation unfold directly. The Japanese cooking here remains deliberately quiet, allowing the precision of each course to take center stage.
