The story
Lek Thai Chef operates from a 150-year-old townhouse in Wauthier-Braine, where Chef Somnuk Insiripong applies decades of Thai cooking experience. He grew up in Thailand’s Isan province, learning from his mother how wrapping ingredients in banana leaves concentrates natural flavors and how grinding spices with a stone mortar creates deeply personal curry pastes. After formal training at the Mandarin Oriental culinary school in Bangkok, he brought those foundational methods to Belgium. His approach to Thai cuisine stays grounded in handcrafted techniques rather than modern shortcuts.
Herb-marinated chicken brochettes form the centerpiece of many orders, accompanied by a smooth peanut sauce and a crisp vinaigrette. The kitchen builds every dish around those same foundational elements. Freshly pounded spice pastes provide the aromatic base for curries and stir-fried components. Portions remain measured to let the individual ingredients speak without heavy sauces masking the original flavors.
The restaurant occupies a century-and-a-half-old townhouse near the center of Wauthier-Braine. Large windows frame a quiet street, while an adjacent terrace garden offers a shaded outdoor space during warmer months. Wooden tables and simple linen settings keep the focus squarely on the food. The Gault&Millau rating reflects how seamlessly the building’s quiet elegance supports a serious culinary program.
