The story
Chef Alfred Petty founded Petty Fours Restaurant in Truro to bring a refined sense of Cornish cooking to a space shaped by family memory. He named the venue to honour his surname and his place among four brothers, while also pointing toward the sweet petit fours that close each meal. A sudden loss shortly before opening reshaped his approach, turning the kitchen into a space where shared memories take priority. You will notice those reflections immediately, from wooden chess sets scattered near the entrance to vintage Lego bricks resting on shelves.
The eight-course tasting menu moves deliberately through regional produce, starting with Cornish salmon paired with Ahrelia caviar and fennel before shifting to a reimagined fish and chip dish featuring pea shoots and tartare sauce. Guests often order the fresh pasta with guanciale and parmesan, or return repeatedly for the lamb accompanied by apricot alongside kale and young peas. The kitchen treats British cuisine as a framework for precise plating and careful heat management. Every plate arrives with exact seasoning, reflecting the standard required when preparing everything by hand.
Natural light fills the central Truro space, highlighting clean lines and uncluttered tables that keep attention firmly on the food. Playful decorative touches appear throughout the venue, including chess pieces arranged on sideboards and framed photographs that recall quiet childhood afternoons. The team maintains a steady, attentive pace, topping up drinks and explaining daily specials without interrupting conversation. Those who have dined here consistently note how the comfortable environment pairs well with the AA two rosette recognition, proving that warmth does not require sacrificing technical precision.
