The story
Porte Noire Kings Cross sits inside the Gasholder building at Coal Drops Yard, presenting a French Mediterranean menu crafted for sharing. The venue holds two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence, reflecting a kitchen led by Head Chef Gonzalo who brings previous experience from a two-Michelin-star background.
Gonzalo prepares the menu daily using fresh seasonal produce, ensuring every plate complements the house wines. The kitchen operates with a Mediterranean spirit, focusing on handmade pasta and house-made ice creams, with dishes designed to be shared across the table. In-house production covers all courses, allowing the team to adjust flavors as ingredients shift through the seasons.
The concept emerged from a friendship between actor Idris Elba and oenophile David Farber after a visit to the Sanger viticultural school in 2018. Their collaboration produced a Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru from Avize, now served by the glass at the bar. Farber draws on decades in the European wine trade to curate the collection, while Elba contributes an instinct for storytelling that guides the selection of bottles worth discussing.
Guests dine within an upscale environment defined by the scale of the converted gasholder structure at Coal Drops Yard. A large wine cabinet displays the full range of selections, which includes the founders' own Petit Port Champagne and an organic Provence rosé. The beverage program also features a Cognac VSOP and premium cocktails, supporting a list built around quality spirits and thoughtful non-alcoholic options.
