The story
The Horn of Plenty sits in Gunnislake, Devon, where Modern British cooking draws its rhythm from the surrounding Tamar Valley. Founder Sonia Stevenson opened the kitchen in 1967, establishing a tradition of seasonal sourcing that recently earned three AA Rosettes. The current team honours that legacy by letting fresh vegetables and heritage meats speak for themselves.
Daily menus shift with the harvest, so guests encounter whatever arrives at the door. Modern British cuisine here favours clean finishes over heavy sauces, a principle visible in both the a la carte dinner and the relaxed lunch service. Afternoon tea arrives in sweet or savoury formats, typically paired with a curated wine list and complimentary prosecco on weekdays.
The dining room occupies an airy ground floor within a manor built for a nineteenth century mine captain. Expansive windows frame the Tamar Valley and Kit Hill, turning every table into a private observatory of the countryside. Five acres of enclosed gardens feed the kitchen, while a stone drawing room and weekend piano evenings encourage guests to linger long after their meals.
