The story
Valentin Reincke built the Zur Sonne restaurant in Frankfurt around 1750 along the Berger Straße. This historic Apfelweinwirtschaft operated steadily from 1768 onward, drawing crowds who valued equal footing over social rank. Modern recognition follows that long-standing community role, earning the property two and a half cooking spoons from the Schlemmer Atlas in 2026. Guests still experience the same unpretentious spirit that once united workers and merchants under one roof.
Chefs prepare classic regional plates using recipes that define Frankfurter cuisine. The menu highlights Handkäs mit Musik served with fresh Bauernbrot and cold butter. Visitors regularly order Frankfurter Schnitzel accompanied by Griewurt, a herb sauce blending seven distinct greens into a bright condiment. Warm Apfelstrudel dressed with vanilla sauce closes out the evening service.
Summer evenings move to the covered beer garden where patrons share long tables. Winter shifts the crowd into a heated barn structure or the interior fireplace room. Traditional wooden benches and exposed beams frame the dining areas without overwhelming the space. Staff pour local apple wine into standard ceramic Bembel vessels.
